Free opera at PVCC

Paradise Valley Community College’s Summer Opera Highlights Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at PVCC’s Performing Arts Center, 18401 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix.

The event will feature selections from 15 of the world’s most famous operas including selections from “Madama Butterfly,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “La Boheme,” “La Traviata” and more. 

The concert will be presented with full lighting and minimalist sets and sung by professional and non‑professional singers.

Daniel Kurek will direct the program. Kurek has sung with the Arizona Opera, Cleveland Opera, Austin Lyric Opera and Opera Pacific. He toured Europe in 2006 as a member of Arizona Masterworks Chorale, and was featured soloist in Vienna, in a program honoring Mozart’s 250th anniversary.

Admission is free.

Broadway tickets to go on sale

Two of Broadway’s biggest hits, “Chicago the Musical” as well as Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s “Movin’ Out” will be presented in Northwest Phoenix at the Maricopa County Events Center, 19403 R.H. Johnson Blvd.

Tickets for these shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 12.

Tickets for “Chicago the Musical” are $60, $50 and $40 and tickets for “Movin’ Out” are $50, $40 and $30.

Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster, the Maricopa County Events Center Box Office, by calling (480) 784‑4444 or online at ticketmaster.com.

Performances of “Chicago the Musical” are at 8 p.m.  Sept. 21‑22. Performances of “Movin’ Out” are 8 p.m. Oct. 19 and 2 and 8 p.m. Oct. 20.

DFT prepping for new season

Desert Foothills Theater is getting ready to open its new and expanded season with a casting call for its first Main Stage show.

The first production, “Gypsy,” includes a variety of people in ensemble roles requiring less experience.

“These ensemble roles provide a great opportunity for anyone who has been thinking about trying their hand at theater or for someone who has not acted in a while and wants to step on the stage again,” Maribeth Reeves, DFT managing director, said.

Auditions will be from 6‑9 p.m. Aug. 20‑21 at Terravita in North Scottsdale. Call (480) 488‑1090 for specific audition times and locations.

All community members, regardless of age are welcome to try out. Those interested in auditioning for principal and supporting roles should schedule their auditions for Aug. 20. Auditions for ensemble and minor roles will take place on Aug. 21. Call backs for roles not cast will take place Sept. 4. and rehearsals begin Sept.10.

Experienced actors are needed for several roles, including Rose, Baby June and Baby Louise, and several other principal and supporting parts.

NVP opens season

North Valley Playhouse will begin its 2007‑08 season with a production of “Book of Days” at 8 p.m. Aug. 16 through Sept. 8.

When murder roars through a small Missouri town, Ruth Hoch begins her own quest to find truth and honesty amid small town jealousies, religion, greed and lies. The play flies through its events like a page‑turning mystery.

Tickets are $12 for matinee and $15 for evening performances.

Visitors create music at ASU Art Museum

Sean Duffy’s newest installation, “The Grove” is on display through Sept. 29 at Arizona State University’s Art Museum.

The exhibit  consists of 20 turntables, each linked to speakers suspended from the ceiling. A selection of albums by instrumental and vocal performers at each turntable allows participants to change albums and tracks.

With more than 400 speakers, the installation creates a canopy of sound from a collective community orchestration of evolving musical compositions. Visitors have a chance to be a part of the oddest symphony ever created.

Admission is free.

Hours are 10 a.m.‑9 p.m. Tue. and 10 a.m.‑5 p.m. Wed. – Sat.

Valley Youth Theatre opens its 2007‑08 season Friday with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Youth theatre presents ‘Joseph’

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s family classic “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” begins the Valley Youth Theatre 2007‑08 season at the Herberger Theater Center.

 Based on the biblical tale of Jacob’s son Joseph and his 11 brothers, the light‑hearted, musical is considered by many to be the most “colorful”of all time.

The collaboration began life in 1968 as a short school concert piece and since has been performed by professional and amateur companies all over the world and by thousands of schools.

The production opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday and runs thorough Aug. 26.

Tickets are $17‑$23 and may be purchased by visiting herbergercenter.org or by calling (602) 252‑8497.

Show times are 7:30 p.m., Thur.‑ Fri; 2 and 7 p.m., Sat.; and 2 p.m. Sun.
