After
reading the Pastor Huck Kusner’s column on August
8, “Evolution 101 for your Student,” I can only
say “DUH Whaaaa?” Where did this man get his science
and math (lack of) education? I can see why some
people prefer to believe that an invisible humanoid‑like
creature created the world on verbal command ten
thousand years ago. It’s just so simple, whereas
comprehending any math beyond the number 10,000
or basic science principles appears to require too
much effort or beyond their ability.
Perhaps
the “creationists” can help me with a little science
problem. Genesis 1:3 states God created light on
Day 1 and Genesis 1:11‑12 states that God
created all the vegetation that covers the earth
on Day 3, but Genesis 1:14‑19 states he didn’t
create the sun until Day 4. Is it just me, or does
this appear to be a little out of order considering
all those pesky scientific theories about the sun
and sunlight and photosynthesis? Did God create
in‑transit light from stars millions of light‑years
from earth before he actually created the stars?
And, just how could the light be millions of light
years from earth if they’re only 10,000 years old?
Oops, now I’ve gone and done it. What’s it to be
Huck, stoning or burned at the stake or a combo?
The
words “I don’t know,” rarely occur to religious
leaders. Shamans and priests throughout history
have always substituted mysticism for knowledge
to explain the unknown to the masses of insecure
people. All people are justifiably insecure about
life and the future. Bad things happen in everyone’s
lives, eventually resulting in our deaths. We don’t
like that do we? Thus when a snake oil salesmen
comes along and promises that if you do as they
say, you too can avoid bad things. Or should that
fail, at least you will become immortal. Well, where
do we sign up for the program and how much is it
going to cost?
So
to the person asking how to prepare their child
for the onslaught of school education in evolution,
tell them to embrace math and science for, like
death and taxes, this is the future whether they
like it or not.
