Political candidates should be forthright with voters

I applaud the nonpartisan Center for Arizona Policy for once again providing its handy Voter’s Guide to the 2006 Primary Election. It allows me to compare my position on important issues with those of the candidates. That is to say, the candidates who deem it worthy to respond to CAP’s survey. In fact, that alone helps make the guide useful for me.

If a candidate cannot take the time to reply to a nonpartisan query, is too ambivalent in their views and by now has not figured out where they stand, or is just plain unwilling to come out with what they really believe and how they’ll vote–well, that’s a candidate I’m dismissing.

These volatile days, we need clarity of ideas and strength of convictions, whatever they may be. Be strong for something.

Shame on those who desire the trappings of elected office but at this late date won’t show their hand.
