Turf Soaring School pilots Dane Pamero, left, and Roy Coulitte get their parachutes strapped on before climbing into a Crab‑103A glider Saturday morning. The two pilots took a flight after the school, which is located at 8700 West Carefree Highway in Peoria, re‑opened after being closed for nearly a year and a half.

Turf Soaring School back in business
by Brian DiTullio

PEORIA – After almost a year‑and‑a‑half, Turf Soaring School has resumed operations.

Pleasant Valley Airport Manager Roy Coulliette announced new management has been found for the well‑known glider business, out of operation since April 1, 2006, due to circumstances “beyond our control.” The first day of operation under new ownership was Sept. 1.

“This is fantastic,” Coulliette said. “It’s the same staff, different leadership.”

Steven Stauber of Beloit, Wis., bought the soaring school on April 27 of this year, related Coulliette. The school will be managed by Dan Webber.

Coulliette said it took so long to find a new owner because he wanted “to find someone who would honor the many outstanding gift certificates and keep the same friendly atmosphere we have always had.”

Webber was not available for an interview, but Coulliette said Webber has been flying sailplanes for 38 years, a Turf Soaring School  instructor for the last 17 years and a Federal Aviation Administration licensed examiner for 10 years. He also served with the Canadian Air Force for 26 years.

Coulliette will continue to manage Pleasant Valley Airport, “to serve the people of Peoria and the surrounding communities,” he said, noting the airport is open to general aviation.

The facility was recently involved in a controversy over planned improvements to Carefree Highway just south of the airport that would have eliminated 139 feet of runway. The project since has been altered to leave the runway as is, although some frontage property along the highway will be eliminated.

The flight school currently operates with four gliders, but Coulliette said they intend to increase the fleet over the next few months.

Pleasant Valley Airport is open seven days a week, and Turf Soaring School, in addition to glider flight instruction, offers both scenic and aerobatic sailplane rides. To make reservations, call (602) 439‑3621.
