Falcons sweep first two
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
CSHS starts year with two victories

CAVE CREEK – It was a new coach, but same success at Cactus Shadows High School for the Falcons’ season opener. Sammy Geiger collected 16 assists, five kills and two blocks, while Ellie Oligmueller had seven kills as the Falcons beat Cienega High School  25‑16, 25‑11, 25‑14 in the first match Aug. 28.

The Falcons made it two in a row in the next match when they outlasted Prescott High School in five games, 23‑25, 19‑25, 25‑23, 25‑19, 15‑8.

Geiger had 25 assists and 12 blocks, Shannon Mikan collected 15 kills and six blocks and Kelsey Magness had 19 digs in the win.

Pinnacle splits matches in first week of play

NORTH VALLEY – Pinnacle High School opened its season Aug. 28 with a 26‑24, 25‑8, 25‑21 loss to Yuma Catholic High School. Rebecca Staff had nine kills to lead the way. The Pioneers overcame that defeat by beating Central High Schoolin three games two days later. Kayley Mundell had six kills, and Morgan Richardson had 13 assists for Pinnacle.

CROSS COUNTRY

CSHS starts year with two victories

ANTHEM – Boulder Creek High School boys and girls teams each finished sixth as a team at last weekend’s Peaks Invitational in Flagstaff. It was the best finish ever for either team.

Garrett Arvidson was the top boys finisher in eighth place, while Natalie Bell and Lindsay Gregory took 14th and 15th, respectively, for the girls.

BOYS GOLF

Defending champs open undefeated

ANTHEM – Boulder Creek High School picked right up where it left after winning last year’s 5A‑Division II boys golf championship. The Jaguars swept North Canyon, South Mountain and Carl Hayden high schools in the 2007 season opener Aug. 28. Boulder Creek’s Jeff Quinn was the medalist with a round of 35 at North Canyon’s home course.

Quinn made it two in a row two days later when the Jaguars swept Deer Valley, Mesa and Valley Vista high schools at Anthem Country Club. Quinn shot a round of 36 to help the Jags hold back second‑place Deer Valley by 27 strokes.
