Jaguar win opens eyes across state

All it takes is one win, and an entire program is transformed.

Boulder Creek’s thrilling 23‑20 win over St. Mary’s last week has not only turned the heads of    football fans across the state, it has made Jaguar fans rabid.

One fan wrote in to remind me not to call the victory over the Knights an upset and that it was “what we in Anthem expected from our team.”

Boulder Creek fans are probably the only ones who predicted that outcome. Then again, fans of any team think their school is going to win it all every year.

Still, it’s hard not to be impressed with the turnaround in Anthem. The team has already matched last year’s win total after two games, and should be favored to start 3‑0 this week.

Other top games include the battle of the Cacti–Cactus and Cactus Shadows. It will be an early measuring stick for the talent in 4A‑Division I. The Cardinals also kick off the season against the 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Here are this week’s prep, college and Cardinals picks:

BOULDER CREEK 28, DESERT MOUNTAIN 14. Expectations are through the roof now at Boulder Creek. Now, the Jaguars have to deliver.

GOLDWATER 31, IRONWOOD RIDGE 17. TheBulldogs proved last week that they’re for real again in 2007. They should make it 2‑0 against a talented team.

PINNACLE 17, WESTVIEW 12. Could Pinnacle be the surprise team in 5A‑II this year? Westview, a state title contender, will find out the hard way.

CACTUS 21, CACTUS SHADOWS 20. This is a “don’t miss” game for high school football fans. The defending 4A‑Division II champions against one of 4A‑I’s all‑time best programs. Cactus’ talent is just barely superior–this one could  go either way.

ARIZONA 31, NORTHERN ARIZONA 10. As an NAU alum, I can only hope the  Lumberjacks pull an Appalachian State and beat their I‑A sister school. In reality, I’m just hoping the game is close in the second quarter.

ARIZONA STATE 48, COLORADO 25. The Sun  Devils looked impressive in their  opener, and Colorado just ain’t that good.

CARDINALS 27, 49ERS 23. The Cardinals torture us every year with high expectations and poor play. Can this be the year they finally put it together? No. But they should beat the Forty‑Whiners.

Last Week: 4‑1 (.800)

Season: 4‑1 (.800)
