Congress,
Bush all show and no go on immigration reform
As
the old saying goes, “talk is cheap.”
When
it comes to comprehensive and realistic immigration reform, the
GOP‑controlled Congress and the Bush Administration have
done a lot of talking and taken little action. Such talk, in this
case, is not cheap and their inaction is costing us billions of
dollars.
Since
the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Bush has repeatedly
said his number one priority is to protect the American public.
And a number of Congressmen on both sides of the political divide
have repeatedly said securing the U.S.‑Mexico border is
vital to the nation’s security.
And
yet, GOP Congressional leaders announced this week they will not
tackle immigration reform right now.
That’s
because the mid‑term elections are approaching and to take
action now would mean some incumbents risk getting booted from
office.
And
so here we are, quickly approaching the five year anniversary
of 9/11–our borders are not secure, illegal immigration continues
to take a fiscal toll on us, and, as recent events have shown,
the potential we could be attacked again remains high.
The
time for talking about immigration reform is done. Now is the
time for action.
Voters
may want to consider taking action this September by voting out
of the race incumbents who have spent the last five years talking
about reform instead of making it happen.
