Eagles coach learns on fly

by Jason Stone

NORTH VALLEY – So far, the 2006 season hasn’t unfolded the way Sandra Day O’Connor’s volleyball team envisioned it.

First, the school fired coach Doug Kiefer two weeks before the first match. Then, new coach Jeff Howard was not officially named to the position until the day before the first match. To make matters worse, Howard had to suspend six players for one of the opening‑week matches for violation of team rules.

The crazy first week resulted in a 1‑2 record as the Eagles opened up with a tough five‑game loss to Red Mountain, beat Tolleson in four games, then lost in three to Yuma when only eight players were available to play.

Howard, an assistant basketball and baseball coach at O’Connor, has been learning about his team on the fly. He’ll get a crash course in the Northwest Region this week as the Eagles are scheduled to open league play against Kingman and Deer Valley.

Jaguars start out 2‑0

ANTHEM – New Boulder Creek coach Chad Speer promised a more competitive team in 2006, and his Jaguars delivered in the first two matches of the season. BCHS started 2‑0 with road wins at Alhambra Aug. 29 and at Desert Ridge Aug. 30.

Boulder Creek started strong with a 25‑16, 25‑13, 25‑8 win at Alhambra. Nicole Lentine collected eight kills, while Brittany Barnum recorded five kills and four blocks. Setter Lindsey Lovell assisted on 27 kills and racked up three aces. Brittany Bartimoccia had five kills and 10 digs.

The Jaguars lost the opening game at Desert Ridge, but rallied to win the next three, including the final one 25‑0.

The Jags will host Mountain Ridge Sept. 7 before playing in a tournament at Queen Creek      Sept. 8‑9.

Falcons win first two

CAVE CREEK – Cactus Shadows got right to work on defending its 4A‑Division II state title with a three‑game sweep of Queen Creek Aug. 29 in the season opener and a four‑game win over Ironwood Ridge two nights later. The Falcons will host Millennium Sept. 7 night before heading to Mesa for the Westwood Tournament Sept. 8‑9.
