Jazz Cowboys kick off concert series in Carefree
by Jim Crawford

The Town of Carefree will present Igor’s Jazz Cowboys for its first installment of the 2007‑08 Concerts in the Garden series. The group will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Town Center Amphitheater, 101 Easy St. in Carefree.

The popular band has been a top draw at the event for several years, bandleader Igor Glenn said.

The Jazz Cowboys employ a unique approach to get their audience’s attention when opening the show.

“We take off our clothes and set fire to our hair,” Glenn says.

Acoustic western swing music is the Cowboys’ specialty.

“If western went by any other name it would probably be called western Dixieland,” Glenn said. “Swing was a popular term in the days when Bob Wills made the music popular. It was invented        during one of the rare times the strings and horns got along. The difference is Wills and others went electric.

“I like the more intimate feel of the acoustic instruments,” Glenn said. “I don’t particularly care for the edge of the electric instruments. We get our brightness from the horns. The music is highly melodic. I describe our music as if Roy Rogers had sung with Louis Armstrong.”

Glenn calls his group’s sound “retro fusion.”

“We like to do tunes everybody knows,” he said. “Then we put our own little touch on them. We do a lot of folk tunes with a jazz sound. We try to do recognizable songs –not the ones that have been beat to death.”

Glenn says he also writes short funny songs for a change of pace during his concerts. The group has been in existence since 1980 using the same format and approach.

“I’ve got some guys who have been with me for years and some just a few months,” Glenn said. “There are usually six guys in the band. It varies from time to time.”

Igor’s Jazz Cowboys promise an enjoyable evening for everyone in the intimate Carefree Town Center Amphitheater.

Admission is free. Plenty of free parking is available.
