Confidence back at BC
Boulder Creek 21, South Mountain 20

ANTHEM – If there was anything Boulder Creek’s football team needed last week against South Mountain, it was confidence.

Coach Dan Friedman said his team had lost some of that after back‑to‑back losses that left the team wondering what had derailed it after opening the year with two impressive wins.

“I think the players and coaches just thought we were going to run through this thing (undefeated) after the first two games,” Friedman said. “And that’s not going to happen.”

Boulder Creek at least got back on the winning side of things against South Mountain, a team that shares its Jaguars mascot. BCHS scored a fourth‑quarter touchdown and staged two defensive stands late in the game in a 21‑20 win.

Boulder Creek (3‑2) blew a 15‑7 lead when South Mountain scored twice in the third quarter. But the Anthem Jaguars converted two fourth‑down plays on its game‑winning drive in the fourth quarter.

First, they converted on a fourth‑and‑16 play to keep the drive going, then scored the winning touchdown on fourth down from the 25‑yard line when quarterback Taylor Davis found Mick Pratt for a touchdown pass.

“We got the drive we needed and we really executed,” Friedman said.

South Mountain (2‑2) failed on two more possessions that could have resulted in a game‑winning field goal. Boulder Creek’s defense ended the game with a sack, the final of three on the night.

“We did a great job of holding them out at the end,” Friedman said.

The victory helped erase the problems the offense had in the three previous games. Boulder Creek had only scored three points in regulation time over the previous 12 quarters.

“We have been moving the ball, but we kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” Friedman said.

Against South Mountain, Devin Contreras had a big night rushing the ball, as he gained 180 yards and scored a touchdown on 24 carries. His longest jaunt of the night went for 44 yards.

Davis tossed two touchdowns in the game and completed eight passes for 98 yards. Davis’ top receiver was Chris Russell, who finished with four catches for 54 yards.

Boulder Creek will try to win two in a row again this week when it travels to Yuma to play Cibola (2‑2), which lost 33‑14 last week at Corona del Sol. It’s the final non‑region game before the Jaguars return to Northwest Region play.

“We need to get everybody ready for the long bus ride to Yuma,” Friedman said.

Cibola has beaten Camelback and Maryvale this season. The Raiders have also played at Sunrise Mountain, a 28‑20 loss.
