Goldwater
offense hard to find in 7‑0 loss to North Canyon

NORTH
VALLEY – Dan Friedman went north when leaving Goldwater’s
football program to coach at Boulder Creek, but the Bulldogs’
offense decided to go south.
After
putting up 36 points in a season‑opening shutout of
Yuma, Goldwater’s offense has struggled and that continued
last week in a 7‑0 loss to North Canyon.
The
Bulldogs (2‑2) were blanked for the second straight
week and have now only scored seven points in their last
12 quarters.
North
Canyon, which is just a few years removed from a 5A‑Division
II state championship, had the game’s only score in the
third quarter when Devin McKendrick caught a 37‑yard touchdown
pass from Dominic Portacerrero.
It
was a tough loss for the Bulldogs, who were only outgained
in total yardage 219‑188. Goldwater was hoping to
bounce back from last week’s 28‑0 loss to Pinnacle
but couldn’t find the end zone.
Running
back C.J. Morgan returned to the lineup after missing a
week with a neck injury and rushed for 74 yards on nine
carries, including a long run of 40 yards. But North Canyon’s
defense held other Goldwater runners to 51 yards on 28 carries
and only allowed 63 passing yards from quarterback Robbie
Kim.
Goldwater
will have to get its offense going this week as high‑powered
Dobson pays a visit. Dobson (4‑1) has only lost to
5A‑Division I power Hamilton and is averaging nearly
40 points per game.
