‘Keeping promises...Always doing the right thing’
by Michael Murphy

With more than 45 years of retail experience and 15 years working overseas, Ann Iverson has been at the helm of Kaybee Toys and Laura Ashley, as well as Britain‑based retailers Mothercare and Storehouse. Iverson owns a consulting firm with a varied client list that includes  companies such as Owens Corning, Shoe Pavilion, Candies Shoes, and Brooks Sports, Inc.

Iverson spoke with The Desert Advocate about her faith and career.

TDA: Your business career is very impressive. How have you survived and thrived in the business world?

AI: Hard work, incredible drive, keeping focused and keeping promises, and always doing the right thing.

TDA: How has your Christian faith affected your career?

AI: Becoming a Christian has changed my heart and because of this, my life. Today, I am a different person. Now I see things through God’s eyes and not my own.

TDA: How has it affected your personal life–and your family?

AI: We are a stronger family, feeling safe with each other and much loved.

TDA: How do you apply Christian principles to business?

AI: The Bible is my starting point for all of my decisions. I find the answers to everything in the Bible.

TDA: Aren’t Christian principles sometimes in conflict with the cut‑throat business practices glamorized by movies like “Wall Street?”

AI: Yes, I see the junk, greed and selfishness all around, including in my work sector. Fighting this is a daily battle for all of us, even for Christians. I try to control my thoughts, and just not go there.

TDA: Can you share some examples of how you’ve used Christian principles in your business?

AI: Doing the right thing is the starting point. I want to get there through fairness, keeping personal integrity, challenging greed versus success, setting the right examples; and always done with kindness and love.

TDA: What kind of consulting do you do?

AI: I work in the branding area with retail and wholesale businesses, specializing in turnaround opportunities for both public and private companies. I have over 40 years in the trade, 15 years in the international market, and have been CEO of public companies both here and overseas.

TDA: It sounds like you’ve had some big changes in your personal life. Can you share those with us?

AI: Yes, I have. I married a wonderful man just over 2 years ago. Life feels very special and blessed.

TDA: You’ve traveled the world. Why did you choose Arizona as a place to settle?

AI: Both of my grown children were born in Arizona. My career started in the Valley. My family is here. The desert feels like home, so it like the perfect place to be. I attend the Vineyard Christian Church in North Phoenix.

TDA: What book are you reading right now?

AI: I read many books at a time, always loving to multi‑task: “The Power of a Praying Wife,” “The Tipping Point,” “Good to Great,” and “The Bible.”

TDA: What’s your idea of a perfect day?

AI: My perfect day is resting on the Big Island of Hawaii with my husband. We horseback ride, nap, eat great meals at Roy’s, and walk.
