Identity theft workshop to be held on Oct. 18

The Carefree office of Edward Jones, an investment firm, will host a free workshop on preventing and detecting identity theft.

U.S. Postal Inspector Chris White will be the speaker, according to a news release from Edward Jones.

The workshop will be held at the Edward Jones office, 37555 Hum Road, in Carefree and will begin with refreshments at 2:30 p.m. The one‑hour talk will begin at 3 p.m. To attend, please RSVP at: (480) 595‑2041.

Two Arizona companies make Fortune list

The Sept. 18 edition of Fortune magazine names two Arizona companies on its 100 fastest‑growing companies list.

The popular business magazine ranks Phoenix‑based Phelps Dodge Corporation at No. 27 and Scottsdale‑based Meritage Homes Corporation at No. 99.

Phelps Dodge is the world’s second‑largest copper producer and has 15,000 employees worldwide, according to Hoover’s, a business research Web site.

Meritage Homes, a homebuilder that employs 1,810 people,  builds roughly 9,400 houses each year in more than 180 communities, according to Hoover’s.

ADEQ cites Phelps Dodge for air quality violations

PHOENIX – State environmental regulators earlier this month cited copper giant Phelps Dodge Corp for air quality violations at the company’s Sierrita mine in Pima County.

“On three separate occasions in late August and early September, tailings from Phelps Dodge’s copper mine operations became airborne and impacted the town of Green Valley,” according to a news release from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. “Mine tailings dust infiltrated residents’ homes and yards, as well as settling on several neighborhood streets,” the ADEQ reported.

Phelps Dodge, facing potential penalties of up to $10,000 per day, has 30 days to notify ADEQ of its permanent corrective measures.


General Dynamics wins $12.1 million defense contract

The U.S. Department of Defense late last week awarded Scottsdale‑based General

Dynamics C4 Systems a $12.1 million contract for a research and development engineering change on Prophet Block III, an electronic warfare and tactical signal intelligence system. The work will be performed in Scottsdale and is expected to be completed in late August 2008, according to the Defense Department’s Web site.
