Darknight ready to roll for fresh season

Playwright Alexx Stuart launches the new season for Darknight Productions’ interactive sports parodies at two new venues: Grimaldi’s Pizzeria every Thursday evening and the Encore Room at Arizona Broadway Theatre every Sunday.

The two locations gave a trial run to the theatre company in June for Stuart’s popular baseball parody, “Murder at Savings & Loan Ballpark (S.Lo.B.).”

The first shows sold out and the owners of both establishments asked DP to plan a season of entertainment running weekly from October through May.

In addition to S.Lo.B. and the golf parody, “The Woes of Kilimanjaro ... Country Club,” Stuart is introducing a new play in January, “Football: The Musical.” “

“We found that audiences love the musical parodies that I wrote last year for the golf show and our holiday show, ‘Coyote Dream: A VERY Arizona Christmas,’” Stuart said. “With the Super Bowl coming to the Valley this season, I figured I had to add a football parody.”

Diedre Kaye, Stuart’s wife, theatre director and co‑owner of DP has high hopes for the coming season.

“I’ve never enjoyed football as much as I do now that I’m directing Alexx’s newest sports parody,” Kaye said. “And of course, with two venues, we’re doubling the size of our troupe. In addition to offering two shows a week at our great new venues, we’re also increasing the number of private shows we’re doing at country clubs and community centers around the Valley. We’re already filling up our fall and winter calendar and even booking shows for next season.”

In addition to the five shows Stuart penned on the slate this season, the couple will co‑author a new musical parody, “Three Divas and a Darryl.”

Kevin Glenn has come on board to serve as musical director for the season’s shows.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Diedre and Alexx,” Glenn said. “ They have cast their shows with talented and fun actors. Diedre and I work well together and Alexx’s writing keeps me laughing. We make a great team. I’m looking forward to being able to perform in one of these shows as well as doing the musical direction for them.

With the exception of Glenn’s help, Stuart and Kaye do everything it takes to run the company on their own.

Kaye does the marketing for the shows or works with Glenn on the music, while Stuart is writing or rewriting shows or organizing props and costumes for the next performance.

Darknight Productions opens their season Thursday at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in Old Town Scottsdale, 4000 N. Scottsdale Road and on Sunday at the Encore Room at Arizona Broadway Theatre , 7701 W. Paradise Lane in Peoria.

Tickets are available by phone at (480)5 95‑7346.

All shows are also available for booking as private shows for parties and corporate events.
