Even
before ProMusica’s founder and artistic director Kevin
Kocazek, who attends Desert View, came to Bohlmann with
the idea to join forces, Bohlmann admits that “it was
always Desert View’s desire to establish itself as an
arts supporter. ProMusica turned out to be a very good
fit.
“We
want to support the arts and develop a love and appreciation
of the arts in young people,” he continues, “with the
hopes that this will transfer into worship. The arts
and worship really go hand in hand.”
The
“Back to the Movies” concert is free, but Promusica
is encouraging a $5 donation per ticket. Bohlmann says
Desert View, which has a nondenominational congregation
of about 1,500, has already sold 110 tickets.
The
concert will feature orchestral music from movie soundtracks
such as “Spiderman,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Pirates of
the Caribbean” and the Harry Potter film series. There
will be a PowerPoint presentation of images from the
movies coordinated with the music. Bohlmann says he’s
working with Promusica to help create some silver screen
ambience as well.
“We’d
like to prepare the venue to look and feel like a real
night at the movies,” Bohlmann says. “It would be nice
to have a theater‑style concession stand with
popcorn and maybe even old‑time ushers in uniforms
with flashlights, and a red velvet rope line at the
entrance. We’ll see.”
Also
new for ProMusica this year is a special appreciation
concert for its season patrons. Patrons in the “Solo”
class ($75) and higher are invited to a special Love
Song Reception on Feb. 11 at the Ironwood Clubhouse
at Anthem Country Club. The romantic event will include
hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Small groups from ProMusica’s
orchestra and chorale will alternate between two stages
performing love songs in solos, duets, trios and quartets,
according to ProMusica’s president Connie Henry.
“It’s
a way for our musicians to show their stuff,” she says,
including, in special performances, the singing talents
of ProMusica’s conductor Kocazek and assistant conductor
Susan Starbuck.
“We’re
so excited to have this opportunity to collaborate with
another community group to bring more music to larger
numbers of people in the North Valley,” Henry says.
“Working together is a privilege and a way to expand
awareness of the cultural arts.
“And
the talent!” she concludes. “There’s such wonderful
talent here in the North Valley.”
And
now, thanks to a little church on Carefree Highway,
there’s one more venue to make it available to a lot
more people.
