Blues society launches blues for kids event

The Phoenix Blues Society, in conjunction with Independent Events and Alice Cooperstown, will present Blues for the City (“Help for its Kids”) Oct. 20 and 21 on Jackson Street between 1st and 2nd streets in downtown Phoenix.

Proceeds from the event will benefit four Phoenix music charities, each serving area youth: Arizona School for the Arts, Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra, Rosie’s House and Young Sounds of Arizona.

The Oct. 20 show will feature three national acts including Kal David and the Real Deal. David toured for several years with John Mayall & the Blues Breakers.

Diunna Greenleaf & Blue Mercy and Eddie Turner are recent nominees for the Blues Music Awards Newcomer of the Year category. 

 

Local artists performing include Cold Shott & the Hurricane Horns with Jerry Lawson; Big Nick & the Gila Monsters; the Chuck Hall Band; The Rocket 88’s; Jimmy Peyton’s Midnite Blues; Sir Harrison & the Blues Kings; Honeyboy Dupree & the Smokehouse Players and Nina Curri with Scotty Spenner.

The estimated show times are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Oct. 21 will feature Zac Harmon, XM Radio’s Newcomer of the Year for 2006 and a Blues Music Award winner for Newcomer of the Year.

Local acts participating will be Hans Olson, Lisa Otey & Diane Van Duerzen of Tucson; The Top Cats; Scotty Spenner; Big Daddy D & the Dynamites from Prescott; Soulcatcher; The Jim Glass Band; Mikel Lander and the KC Blues Band.

 Attendance for Sunday’s event is limited to 350 and is part of a two‑day special event. VIP tickets are being sold exclusively through the four benefiting charities and the Phoenix Blues Society. 

The estimated showtimes for Sunday are noon to 9 p.m.

Ticket prices are $35 for a VIP Two Day Pass.

Admission to Saturday’s Block Party is $20 for adults and $10 and children 12 and younger.  Tickets are available from the Arizona School for the Arts, Phoenix Symphony Guild Youth Orchestra, Rosie’s House, Young Sounds of Arizona and the Phoenix Blues Society.
