NORTH
VALLEY – It wasn’t exactly the Running of the Bulls in
Spain, but Goldwater certainly did some running last week
in Surprise.
With
the team badly needing a victory after three straight
defeats, Goldwater coach Ed Cook got what the doctor ordered
as his team rolled up 407 rushing yards in a 44‑0
blowout of Valley Vista.
“We
got some things going but we’re still not firing right,”
Cook said about his team’s offense, which was shut out
twice and held to just six points in the three losses.
“It’s really hard to figure out, but we’re a rollercoaster
(offensively).”
It
was a rollercoaster mainly rolling downhill against Valley
Vista. Seven players averaged at least six yards per rush
and the team averaged nearly 10 yards a run as a team.
Bobby
Tomas again led the way with 111 yards on 10 carries and
two touchdowns. It was Tomas’ second 100‑yard rushing
game of the year.
Fred
Harvey rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns, while Garrett
Lee (60 rushing yards) racked up two running scores and
C.J. Morgan another.
Goldwater’s
defense, meanwhile, did not allow Valley Vista to mount
any scoring drives as the Bulldogs earned their second
shutout of the season.
“The
defense has been playing great all year,” Cook said.
Goldwater
put up three touchdowns in the first quarter but had trouble
on two of the extra points to leave the score at 19‑0.
Two more touchdowns and one conversion put the game at
32‑0 at halftime.
“We’re
still trying to figure this thing out,” said Valley Vista
coach Jason Wilke, who is leading a team in its first
season at varsity with no seniors.
With
the win, Goldwater moved back into the 5A‑Division
II power point race at No. 13. The Bulldogs will travel
to Kingman this week to play another team with the Bulldog
moniker. Kingman enters the game 1‑5, coming off
a 27‑0 loss to Deer Valley.
