PHOENIX
– The Arizona attorney general’s office said Thursday
that state Treasurer David Petersen has accepted a plea
agreement offered by prosecutors. Details of the agreement,
which follows a month’s long investigation into fraud
and conflict of interest allegations, were not disclosed.
Attorney
general’s spokeswoman Andrea Esquer said Petersen will
appear in Maricopa County Superior
Court on Oct. 25 for an arraignment and that Petersen
would waive holding a preliminary hearing.
She
declined to discuss the contents of the agreement, including
what charge or charges are involved and whether the agreement
calls for the first‑term Republican to leave his
elected office.
“Nothing
has been filed in court so we’re not going to comment
on the plea agreement until it is official,” she said.
Petersen and his attorney did not immediately return calls
for comment.
