Realignment to affect local teams
Cactus Shadows to switch divisions, O’Connor going to 4A

NORTH VALLEY – Boulder Creek sports fans, it might be time to break out those maps to get you to Surprise. If you’re a Cactus Shadows fan, you may want to use Mapquest to find out how to get to Apache Junction. And if you follow the sports teams at O’Connor, it might be a good idea to get acquainted with the teams in 4A.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association last week released its initial region realignment plan for the next two‑year block last week. Under the plan which is still awaiting appeals and final approval, Cactus Shadows will be moving up to 4A Division I, while O’Connor will be moving from 5A to 4A. Boulder Creek and Goldwater, meanwhile, will remain in the 5A Northwest Region but with a new group of teams.

Executive Board meetings for the 5A and 4A conferences will hear appeals for region placement this week regarding new alignments for the 2007‑08 sports season.

Under the plan, Cactus Shadows, a current member of 4A‑Division II, will move up to Division I in 4A and join the Desert Sky Region with Apache Junction, Chaparral, McClintock, Paradise Valley, Saguaro and Shadow Mountain.

O’Connor will move from 5A‑Division II to 4A‑Division I in the Wells Fargo 1 Region. The Eagles will be placed in a league with Apollo, Independence, Prescott, Sunnyslope and Thunderbird.

Boulder Creek and Goldwater would be part of a new Northwest Region, which would be completely comprised of Division II teams after being split between Division I and II teams the last two years. The schools will be place in a region with Deer Valley and Kingman as well as new Surprise schools Valley Vista and Willow Canyon.

The 5A board will hear appeals on Oct. 25, while 4A board members will hear them on Oct. 30. A final schedule for next school year won’t be ready until the spring.

Here is a roundup of other local prep sports news:

SWIMMING

Boulder Creek’s boys team finished an undefeated regular season (8‑0) last week when it defeated Mountain Ridge, a team that also came into the meet unbeaten. Senior Avram Estes swam a personal best in the anchor leg of the 4x100‑yard freestyle relay, which was the final event, to give the Jaguars the narrow team win in dramatic fashion.

Just two years ago, Boulder Creek only had five members on the team. Top contributors to this year’s unbeaten record were Estes, senior Toby Birnbrich, senior Kyle Burdell, junior Scott McFall and sophomore Zach Birnbrich.

The 4A‑Division II state meet is set for Oct. 27 and 28 at Arizona State University’s Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex.

GIRLS GOLF

Cactus Shadows finished the regular season with a 15‑1 record last week as the Falcons beat Arcadia 164‑175 on Oct. 16. Lauren Weaver was the medalist with a round of 36. The Falcons were scheduled to play in the East Sky Region tournament on Oct. 24‑25 at Las Colinas Golf Course, the final tournament before the 4A‑Division state tournament.

BOYS GOLF

The final round of the Wells Fargo 2 Region tournament is set for 11 a.m. on Oct. 25 at the Dove Valley Golf Course.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Wells Fargo 2 Region cross country meet is set for Oct. 26 at the Thunderbird Regional Park in north Glendale. The boys race begins at 3:40 p.m., followed by the girls race at 4:10 p.m.
