Jaguars start state with sixth seed
by Jason Stone

ANTHEM – Boulder Creek coach Chad Speer was hoping for a top four seed in the 5A‑Division II state tournament so his team would be able to play two home matches if it advanced to the second round.

But losses to Mountain Ridge and North Canyon last week left the Jaguars in the sixth spot for this week’s state tournament, meaning only one home match for Boulder Creek. That came on Oct. 24 against region‑foe Deer Valley in a match played after press time.

It was the third meeting of the year between the two teams with each one winning on the other’s home court–Deer Valley in five games at Boulder Creek on Sept. 5 and the Jaguars in four at Deer Valley on Oct. 10.

A win for Boulder Creek (25‑8 overall, 9‑5 Northwest Region) would have advanced the Jaguars to the quarterfinals Oct. 26 against either third‑seed Marcos de Niza or No. 14‑seed Sunnyside. The match is scheduled to be held at the site of the higher seed.

The state tournament will wrap up Oct. 28 when Hamilton High School hosts the semifinals in the morning and the championship at 5 p.m. The finals will be televised by Cox‑7.

O’Connor barely makes 5A‑II playoff field

NORTH VALLEY – Thanks to season‑ending wins over Trevor Browne and Deer Valley, O’Connor squeaked into the next‑to‑last spot for the 5A‑II state tournament.

The Eagles broke a three‑match losing streak Oct. 17 with a 25‑6, 25‑15, 25‑19 win over Trevor Browne. One night later, O’Connor beat Deer Valley, 25‑21, 24‑26, 26‑24, 22‑25, 15‑11, to finish the regular season 11‑19 overall and 6‑8 in the Northwest Region.

The Eagles were scheduled to play at second‑seeded Desert Mountain in the first round of the state tournament, but results were unavailable at press time.

Goldwater finishes season

NORTH VALLEY – Goldwater ended its season last week with losses on the road at Deer Valley and Mountain Ridge. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 11‑28 record and 5‑9 mark in the Northwest Region.

Cactus Shadows alive in tourney

CAVE CREEK – Cactus Shadows routed Bradshaw Mountain in three games on Oct. 24 to advance in the Wells Fargo 2 Region tournament. The third‑seeded Falcons won the first‑round match over the Bears 25‑12, 25‑19, 25‑19 to advance to the second round against Notre Dame.

The Falcons will travel to Notre Dame for a 5 p.m. match on Oct. 25 with the winner heading to the championship match at No. 1‑seed Sunnyslope at 6 p.m. on Oct. 26.

The victory over Bradshaw Mountain guaranteed that the Falcons will be in this year’s 4A‑Division II state tournament. Seeding depends on final power points, which will be calculated after the completion of all 4A region tournaments.
