Be
wary of Waring
Republican
candidate for reelection Sen. Jim Waring states he wants to
be known for his work in the legislature. There are votes of
his that come to mind as crucial.
In
2004, a bill that would have shortened the time allowed citizens
to gather signatures for initiatives was strongly supported
by Waring. Voters from Districts 7 and 8 gave a resounding no
(67.06 percent) at the ballot box, thus showing a lack of representation
of his constituents.
Sen.
Waring was at the forefront in support of House Bill 2351 (2005),
a municipal ballot signature measure that would have made it
more difficult to do a zoning referendum in smaller cities and
towns by requiring a greater number of qualified signatures.
Fortunately, this bill never reached voters.
Greater
disdain came with his support of HB 2180, the Spur Cross Ranch
Conservation Area amendment, which would have taken access control
of Spur Cross Ranch from Maricopa County and the Town of Cave
Creek and placed it in the hands of the State Parks Board. HB
2180 died a quick death.
So
with upcoming elections, I urge all in our District 7 to realize
that citizen lawmaking is an important tool of democracy, to
fight to preserve our right to have a voice in government, and
to protect Spur Cross Ranch. Begin by not voting for candidate
Jim Waring in November.
