Goldwater
still has shot at title

Football Roundup
NORTH
VALLEY – After winning its last two games without
completing a pass, Goldwater went back to the air
last week, leading to a big win over Mountain Ridge.
Miles
Kizer threw a 4‑yard touchdown pass to Nick
Raimo with eight seconds before halftime and it proved
to be the winning score in a 14‑10 win for Goldwater,
the Bulldogs’ third straight win.
Goldwater
(5‑4 overall, 4‑1 Northwest Region) remained
alive for the region championship with the victory,
but will need help. The Bulldogs must win their final
game at Deer Valley and hope Mountain Ridge beats
North Canyon, which would give all three teams a share
of the region crown.
Either
way, it appears the Bulldogs wrapped up a 5A‑Division
II playoff spot by beating Mountain Ridge. The Bulldogs
entered the week sixth in the latest power point standings.
Mountain
Ridge (4‑5, 4‑1) took an early 3‑0
lead on a 35‑yard field goal, but Goldwater
needed only 21 seconds to return the score. Quarterback
Miles Kizer ran in from 6 yards out to give the Bulldogs
a 7‑3 lead.
The
Mountain Lions took the lead again two minutes into
the second quarter when Kevin Yost passed to Jonathan
Ott for a 20‑yard touchdown and a 10‑7
lead.
But
with eight seconds left in the half, Kizer passed
to Raimo for what turned out to be the game’s final
score.
Bob
Tomas rushed for 128 yards for Goldwater.
O’Connor
gets past Trevor
Browne, 17‑12
NORTH
VALLEY – With the playoffs out of the picture, Sandra
Day O’Connor needed wins in its final two games to
at least earn a winning record for the third straight
year. The Eagles did half the trick last week with
a narrow 17‑12 win over Trevor Browne.
Tyler
Rajec scored a 3‑yard touchdown in the fourth
quarter to lift O’Connor (5‑5 overall, 2‑4
Northwest Region) to the dramatic win. Bryan Turski
hit a 30‑yard field goal to start the scoring
in the first quarter, but Trevor Browne answered with
a touchdown for a 6‑3 lead after a failed extra
point attempt.
Jager
Lee scored from 6 yards out in the third quarter to
put O’Connor back up 10‑6, but Trevor Browne
scored another rushing touchdown from a yard out to
vault back ahead 12‑10.
O’Connor
next plays at San Luis (0‑9) to finish the season.
Boulder
Creek blanked
at home
ANTHEM
– Boulder Creek failed to score in a 54‑0 home
loss to Pinnacle last week. The Jaguars dropped their
seventh game in their first varsity season, and will
try to end the year on a positive note with a home
game against Willow Canyon this week.
This
week’s game will be a preview of a 2007 Northwest
Region matchup. Boulder Creek (2‑7), which has
been playing an independent schedule this year, will
be part of the Northwest, which will include Willow
Canyon, a Surprise school playing its second varsity
season.
