Jaguars roar to finish

by Jason Stone

ANTHEM – Even though it wasn’t Boulder Creek’s first season of varsity girls volleyball, it certainly was a season of firsts for the Jaguars. Boulder Creek chalked up its first winning season, its first state tournament appearance, and after beating Deer Valley last week, its first state tournament victory.

The Jaguars finished their season last week by beating Deer Valley in the first round of the 5A‑Division II state tournament before falling to Marcos de Niza in the quarterfinals.

Boulder Creek (26‑9) played region rival Deer Valley for the third time this season and won the rubber match. In a marathon match that went the distance, the Jaguars rallied from 2 games to 1 down to beat the Skyhawks 25‑22, 21‑25, 21‑25, 25‑18, 15‑5.

In the quarterfinals two nights later, Marcos de Niza, the third seed in the tournament, swept Boulder Creek in three games.

O’Connor girls make state again

NORTH VALLEY – Sandra Day O’Connor qualified for the state tournament again in 2006, but could not get out of the first round this time.

Desert Mountain, the eventual 5A‑Division II state champion, ended the Eagles’ season with a 25‑10, 26‑24, 25‑7 win. O’Connor, which finished fifth in the state last year, ended the season with a 11‑20 record. The Eagles are moving down a classification to play in 4A next year.

Falcons take time to heal before state

CAVE CREEK – Cactus Shadows’ late‑season struggles with injuries and inconsistency continued in the Wells Fargo 2 Region tournament last week, but the Falcons were able to take a week off to heal up in time for their defense of the 4A‑Division II state championship.

Cactus Shadows, which won its second 4A title in three years last year, saw its region championship hopes fade Oct. 25 in the second round this year.

Notre Dame, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, put an end to the third‑seeded Falcons’ chances in the region tournament with a 26‑24, 27‑25, 25‑22 win in the second round. Notre Dame’s Tatum Jestila had 17 kills, one block, four aces, and 15 digs to lead the Saints.

The loss kept Cactus Shadows (23‑17) from playing for the region title at Sunnyslope, but gave the Falcons more time to heal up with the state tournament not set to begin until Nov. 7. The 4A is playing its state bracket a week after 5A. Last year, both conferences staged concurrent tournaments at Jobing.com Arena, formerly Glendale Arena.
