The
dance troupe is refurbishing the holiday classic from
the ground up including new lighting, choreography,
scenery and costumes from all over. A generous gift
of $1.3 million from the Sybil B. Harrington Trust,
the largest single gift in Ballet Arizona’s history,
with additional support from Arizona Public Service
and SCF Arizona, are bringing this year’s “Nutcracker”
to life.
Now
in its 21st season, Ballet Arizona is proud to present
what it claims to be the most lavish holiday performance
ever created for an Arizona stage.
Skilled
professionals throughout North America are working
to make this enormous production possible. While the
snow scene was made here in the desert along with
costumes for Mother Ginger’s kids, soldier costumes
were made in Seattle; the angel and flower costumes
were made at Ballet West in Salt Lake City; while
other aspects of the production were manufactured
in Pittsburgh, Austin, New York City and Toronto,
Canada.
Renowned
choreographer Ib Andersen’s all new production will
be a must‑see event for the whole family.
“The
old set was 30 years old,” Anderson said. “It was
literally falling apart. And it wasn’t very attractive.
It was like a run‑down, very old car and now
we’ve got a new Rolls Royce.”
