Hands‑on help for homeless schoolchildren at Pappas
by Kathleen Stinson

DESERT FOOTHILLS – A group of six people have found a way to help those in need that goes beyond handing out a check.

"It's important in a community to be helpful in a hands‑on way," said Steve Cushner, Anthem resident and vice president of the Daisy Mountain Lions Club.

In the last two weeks of November, the club members raised $1,400 in individual contributions from the community to buy toys, clothing and other necessities for the Thomas J. Pappas School for the homeless in Phoenix.

"It's more personal," said June Cushner, Anthem resident and member of the club. "Like that blind fellow in Anthem. We could have just given him money, but by personal contact we found out he needed more help than an anonymous call. He was very down on things when we met him."

Evidently, the blind gentleman had initially planned to stay in Anthem for one year.

The club has helped the man over the years.

"It's three years later now and he's happy here and getting the training he needs to get a guide dog," June said.

"It's very important to let them know we do care," June said.

The club members went shopping for toys last Sunday to give to the children at the Pappas School.

"We were like little kids in a toy store when we went shopping. We bought $600 of toys and some clothes Sunday," June said.

The group picked the Pappas School because it meets a critical need in the community.

The whole idea is these kids don't have addresses and they need addresses to register for school, Steve said.

"They're living in cars and would be looked down on by the general community" if they attended a general public school, Steve said. "At the Pappas School they are able to learn without those  pressures. It's a beautiful setup."

They hoped to deliver the presents Dec. 8, she said.

The club members are involved in other charitable projects around the community such as offering free eye screenings, the couple said
