Fine arts calendar promises a memorable ‘07 season

The new year is shaping up to be a memorable one in the arts community of the North Valley.

Several of the popular fine arts venues have announced upcoming events geared to appeal to audiences of all ages.

Now in its 32nd year, Desert Foothills Theater, a program of the Foothills Community Foundation, will once again wow audiences with an exciting season of Main Stage shows and a series of entertaining, intimate theatricales. DFT calls theatricales a single evening theatrical event in a venue other than a theater.

Diedre Kaye, DFT artistic committee chair, said patrons are excited about the theatricales.

"We are excited to bring a new type of theater to the Desert Foothills community," Kaye says. "We hope the theatricales will engage the audience and keep them smiling well after the shows end."

The next Main Stage production will be "Hot ‘n Cole: A Cole Porter Celebration" featuring timeless classics, such as "Too Darn Hot," "In the Still of the Night," "Let's Do It," "Can Can," and "Night & Day." Program director is Dee Dee Wood with musical direction from Bill Moore.

"We are pleased to announce that Emmy Award‑winning director/choreographer Dee Dee Wood will once again direct our Main Stage shows at Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center," says Toby Payne, DFT chairman and sound designer. "In addition, we are very fortunate that Diedre Kaye and Alexx Stuart of Darknight Productions are donating their time and services to assist us."

Two of the DFT theatricales were written by Stuart including his " Buzzard Ball" play which was a hit in DFT's 2003‑04 season and is now in development for a movie, Payne said.

The next theatricale will be Stuart's "Murder at Savings and Loan Ballpark (S.L.O.B.)" beginning at 5 p.m. at The Satisfied Frog,  6245 E. Cave Creek Road, in Cave Creek. Tickets are $50 and includes dinner.

Payne encourages theater‑lovers to purchase subscriptions for the new Main Stage performances early.  Subscriptions offer a savings of 20 percent and range from $28 to $35 depending on the day.

"As in previous seasons, we anticipate the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center will fill up quickly for our Main Stage shows, so it is really to the patron's advantage to subscribe," he says.

Switching gears, Cave Creek Museum has some unique events coming up.

Antique Appraiser Sean Morton will examine your treasures, discuss their origins, and assess their value from 10 a.m. ‑ 4 p.m.  Jan. 19‑20 during the Antique Appraisal Fair at the museum.

Morton is a member of the Antiques Appraisal Association of America and has more than 19 years experience in the fine arts and antiques field.

"Mining the Desert Foothills" is a program aimed at children 7 ‑ 10 years old that teaches them about gold, silver and copper. During the program the children will examine technology and culture, and the mining economy of the historical Town of Cave Creek, where entrances to mines, old cabins and mining equipment can still be found.

The "Chocolate Chip Mining Game" gives the kids a chance to improve their understanding of the economies of mining. "Birdseed Mining" teaches kids about ore deposits that were mined around the Cave Creek area. Finally, the youngsters will make a keepsake bracelet from their findings.

February has been designated "Authors' Month" at the museum. During the month the museum will host several authors of books relating to Cave Creek or Arizona history.

Marshall Trimble, often referred to as the "Will Rogers of Arizona," and Arizona's official state historian, famous cowboy singer and storyteller will present a history/folklore program from 2‑3 p.m. Feb. 24 at the museum.

Cost for the program is $10 per person and seating is limited. Those planning to attend should call (480) 488‑2764 by Feb. 22.

The museum is taking reservations for those who wish to have lunch with Trimble prior to his presentation.

The luncheon takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and cost is $100 per person for non‑members and $50 per person for museum members. Cost includes lunch, an autographed Marshall Trimble book and reserved seating at his 2 p.m. presentation at the museum.

The Sonoran Arts League will present the Sonoran Festival of Fine Art  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  March 30 ‑  April 1 on Easy Street at the Carefree Town Center.

The juried show will feature 100 local and nationally‑acclaimed painters, sculptors, jewelers, wood and glass artists, photographers and mixed media artists.

Other highlights will include entertainment, in‑booth artist demonstrations and special exhibits dedicated to wildlife and desert preservation.

Carefree Farmers' Market will take place in conjunction with the festival in the Carefree Town Center Amphitheatre.

The market features fresh produce, chef demonstrations, organic meats and cheeses, specialty Italian entrees, tamales, award‑winning salsas, diet‑defying desserts, pastries and freshly‑baked artisan breads.

Visitors who wish to try their hand at painting can participate in the "A Brush with Fine Art" event during the festival. The popular interactive event takes place in two tents furnished with paints, canvasses and brushes.

"Any profit that the League makes from the Festival will be put back into the community proportionately between student scholarships, art awareness, and art education," says Beth Zink, Sonoran Arts League president.  "We hope to raise funds through sales of this year's Festival Poster. During last year's event, pencil artist Dick Mueller was chosen to create the image for this year's poster."

The league's members actively participate in community outreach programs, including mentoring programs, workshops, seminars, fundraisers and other activities.

Sonoran Arts League is dedicated to the promotion of art, artists, and art education with the belief that art and artistic awareness is essential to the well being of life and the community.
