High in the Mazatzal Wilderness, Kevin McDavid guides the mules through day four of the trip from Club Cabin heading to Dead Man Creek. It was on this day that McDavid's border collie Salty got lost.

On the Davenport Trail going to Club Cabin, about 40 miles into the trip, Kevin McDavid, Frank Windes and Bob Stinson (front to back) ride behind the mules on day three of the journey. When they camped that night at Club Cabin they discovered it had burned down.
