ANTHEM - A tractor trailer transporting frozen salmon was rear ended
by another semi on northbound I 17 near Anthem Way late Thursday
night, spewing fish onto the roadway and sending two people to the
hospital with non life threatening injuries. The accident forced
a road closure for at least five hours while crews cleaned up the
smelly mess.
"It was a big deal because the vehicles were so big,"
said Dennis Tyrrell, spokesperson for Daisy Mountain Fire Department.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. March 23 when,
according to Tyrrell, a vehicle off on the shoulder began to pull
back onto the freeway.
The driver of the lead semi reportedly put on his brakes to avoid
the vehicle entering upon the northbound lanes, slowing to about
15 mph, and the second truck then rear ended the first. Only the
two semis were involved.
No names were released, but the driver of the first semi was okay,
according to DMFD. There were two occupants in the second semi whose
ages Tyrrell estimated between 45 and 50. The driver, a male, suffered
minor injuries and was transported to John C. Lincoln North Mountain.
The female passenger, who was in the truck's sleeper at the time
of the accident, was airlifted to the same hospital. Tyrrell said
a pre existing medical condition made her case more urgent.
Four engine companies, one ladder company, two ambulances and one
helicopter responded to the scene.
