ANTHEM - A six year old Anthem girl died from injuries sustained
Sunday after being struck by a pickup truck driven by her dad.
According to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputy Doug Matteson,
the accident occurred at 3:20 p.m. when William Simpkins backed
his truck out from the family residence near Gavilan Peak Parkway
and Daisy Mountain Drive. He then began to pull forward and didn't
see the girl sitting near the front of the property.
"The little girl sustained severe head trauma," said Dennis
Tyrrell, spokesperson for Daisy Mountain Fire Department. Six firefighters
treated her with resuscitation measures at the scene.
Four emergency units responded to the call, including one engine
crew who set up the landing zone for a medical helicopter. She was
airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center in Phoenix
in critical condition, but later died of her injuries.
