BC baseball surviving packed schedule
by Jason Stone

DVUSD - If you try telling the Boulder Creek baseball team that it was spring break last week, the Jaguars might not find it very funny. Then again, the way the Jaguars took care of their last three opponents, they appeared to have no problem being all business while their classmates took a break.

Playing four games in four days with five more scheduled over four days this week, the Jaguars are certainly getting a crash course in life at the varsity level in their first season as a program. The course began in earnest last week with consecutive wins over out of state Faith Lutheran and a victory over Pinnacle at the Eagle Invitational.

Putting together its first winning streak of the season, Boulder Creek (8 9 overall entering the week), prepares to face two Colorado and three Oregon schools this week in a continuation of the round robin tournament.
"We're getting through it," assistant coach Jeff Osterode said about the Jaguars' packed schedule. "We're thin in pitching and some other areas, and not having any seniors hurts a bit. But we're doing the best we can."

Boulder Creek stacked the roster with 18 to 20 players during the tournament to help ease the load for the varsity regulars. It helped the Jaguars eke out the wins against teams who were likewise stretched by so many games in a short amount of time.

In the Jaguars' 7 1 win over Faith Lutheran March 24, Boulder Creek broke open a 1 1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior catcher Chad Meneke smacked a grand slam. "It was really dramatic," Osterode said.

A day later in the rematch, Boulder Creek opened up a 5 0 lead early before Faith Lutheran rallied for four runs to tighten the game. But junior Jordan Flittie came in to pitch the final two innings in relief and earned the save.

In what Osterode called the Jaguars' "best game of the year," Boulder Creek received key hits in its next game to outlast Pinnacle 7 6.
"We just swung the bats really well and battled back and forth," Osterode said. "They jumped up 2 0, but we came back."
Freshman Brendon Heady pitched the final four innings to earn the win for Boulder Creek.

"We're considering this a winning streak," Osterode said. "This is our first little winning streak. We got a taste of success, and we're trying to enjoy it."
