Falcons
roll to rout in region opener
League games continue this week

CCUSD - Nothing prepares a team like playing against the best.
If that axiom is true, the Cactus Shadows baseball team couldn't
be more prepared for the Wells Fargo 2 Region season.
Playing the state's No. 1 toughest schedule hasn't given Cactus
Shadows the chance at many wins, but it has prepared the team
for the region slate, coach Tom Scala said. |

"I
think playing all of these tough games absolutely helps us,"
said Scala, whose team went 2 1 last week to improve to 6 7 on the
season. "In the long run, seeing that kind of pitching will
make every other pitcher in our region seem slow. The baseball will
seem like a grapefruit."
The ball certainly looked big to the Falcons in a 15 0 throttling
of Washington March 24, their first region win of the year.
Cactus Shadows busted through for a season high nine run inning,
thanks to four home runs-including three consecutive. Matt Summers,
Trask Switzenberg and Ollie Goulder smacked back to back to back
homers, and Goulder's younger brother, Jake, connected later in
the inning.
"You don't see the back to back to back very often, that's
for sure," Scala said. "We're definitely going into the
right direction."
Despite going
into this week's pair of region games against Notre Dame with a
losing record, the Falcons still sit in good position in power points
thanks to a tough schedule that has included games against Chaparral,
Catalina Foothills, Sunnyside, Greenway and Notre Dame.
In a 10 0 loss to Chaparral March 20, Cactus Shadows faced one of
the state's top pitchers, Charles Brewer. The 92 mile per hour fireballer
is one of the top 100 prospects in the nation, and Cactus Shadows
only managed five scattered hits off Brewer.
"He's as
tough as they come," Scala said. "We won't see another
pitcher like him this year."
The Falcons certainly won't this week against Notre Dame, but they
know that doesn't mean it'll be two easy wins-especially since Notre
Dame handed the Falcons a 4 2 loss March 16 in the region opener.
The winner of the two games this week will grab first place in the
region.
"But that's a lot of ifs because those are going to be two
tough games," Scala said.
The Falcons were scheduled to host Notre Dame March 28 but the game
was played past press time. The teams will also play at Notre Dame
at 3:45 p.m. March 30. |
