Jaguars
have big test at tourney
by Jason Stone
DVUSD - Boulder Creek has impressed some boys volleyball fans
across the state in its first season as a team. But Jaguars
coach Chad Speer said this weekend's Mountain View Invitational
in Marana will be the true test for his team.
"This tournament will really tell a lot where we're at
and separate who is who in 5A," Speer said about the
two day event, which runs March 24 and 25.
Tucson schools dominate the field, but that's OK to Speer,
who knows some of the best teams are in the southern part
of the state.
"We play like four or five of the teams ahead of us (in
the power rankings), so we'll be able to tell where people
are," Speer said.
Boulder Creek is scheduled to play seven matches in less than
24 hours and possibly more if the Jaguars advance in bracket
play. They are scheduled to play Ironwood Ridge, (Marana)
Mountain View, St. Mary's, Flowing Wells and Cholla on the
first day, and Amphitheater and Basha the second day in round
robin play.
The
bracket portion of the tournament starts at noon March 25
with the championship set for 5 p.m. |

Boulder
Creek could have a shot to go deep in the bracket the way it has
been playing. The Jaguars swept Sunrise Mountain and Centennial
last week to improve their record to 7 2.
In the three game win over Sunrise Mountain March 14, Mason Maki
collected 25 assists, while Christian Puszie had 16 kills, seven
blocks and four service aces. Adam Gartman added 11 digs for the
Jaguars.
Maki, a sophomore setter, also came up big in a sweep of Centennial
two days later with 17 assists.
"They're starting to click," Speer said about his team.
"They're starting to realize that they're pretty good. After
about the Wolf Howl Tournament (March 4) a couple of the guys
really believed what they were doing."
